The exchange of Fe2+ and Mg2+ between olivine and garnet has been investigated at 50 kbar and 1100°C. Symmetric simple mixture assumptions are sufficient to describe the exchange reaction. Excess free energies of mixing of olivine and garnet are estimated to be 2.77 +/- 0.61 and 2.12 +/- 0.69 kcal per gram cation, respectively. From the data on Fe-Mg partitioning between olivine and orthopyroxene reported by Matsui and Nishizawa [1], the excess free energy of olivine at 30 kbar and 1000°C has been calculated under the same assumptions. The two values for excess energy of olivine are consistent within the standard error. The result indicates that orthopyroxene is non-ideal with a considerable positive deviation from Raoult's law, which may be comparable with that in the case of garnet.
