Elevated solar ultraviolet radiation associated with stratospheric ozone reduction may exert significant increases in the UV radiant flux reaching the ground surface mainly in the UVB (280-315 nm) spectral portion. This study aiming to explore the UV radiant flux levels in the eastern Mediterranean belt, hourly measurements of global UVB (Guvb), UVA (Guva) and broadband (Gh) radiant fluxes collected at Athalassa, Cyprus (350 N, 330 E, 165 m above MSL) from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2006, during a joint research project between the Athens University and the Meteorological Service of Cyprus, are employed. These data were used to further addressing spectral radiant fluxes dependence on various sky conditions and several other parameters.
The analyses of hourly spectral UVB and UVA values revealed significant diurnal variation of these radiant fluxes during daylight hours. The hourly radiometric ratio (Guva/Gh) increased from 0.0293+/-0.003 to 0.0310+/-0.003 as sky conditions changed from clear to overcast skies when the SR index is used; whereas, when sky clearness (ɛ) and brightness (Δ) indices are employed, the hourly radiometric ratio increased from 0.0297+/-0.002 to 0.033+/-0.002 as sky conditions changed from cloud-free to overcast, with an annual mean of 0.0309+/-0.002. For that sky indices, the respective hourly radiometric (Guvb/Gh) ratio also increased from 0.00159+/-0.00022 to 0.00169+/-0.00023 and from 0.00165+/-0.00023 to 0.00172+/-0.00021, as sky conditions changed from clear to overcast skies.
