Suspended sediments from the river mouth to the upper portions of the Huanghe (Yellow River) were collected and analysed to determine their chemical composition. Comparison with other large world rivers indicates that trace element levels are relatively low in this high-turbidity river. Natural weathering and erosion are of primary importance in controlling particulate element concentrations, although the impact from anthropogenic activities is also visible. Finally, input of particulate elements to the China Sea is assessed from the river sediment load and compositions.
