The search for a physical substructure going beyond quarks and leptons as elementary constituents of matter is discussed. It is argued that the onset of the 'new physics' going beyond the standard model should be observed at energies corresponding to only a few TeV in the CMS in lepton-lepton or lepton-nucleon collisions. Such energies are available in the radiation emitted by sources like Cyg X-3 and Her X-1. Some of the expected signatures of the 'new physics' are discussed and compared with observational puzzles which, it is argued, find a natural explanation in terms of the proposed 'new physics'.
