The modification of shock structure by efficient particle acceleration in shocks, with consequent changes in particle acceleration, is studied and analytic solutions are found describing the diffusive acceleration of particles with momentum-independent diffusion coefficients in hyperbolic, tangent-type velocity transitions. It is found that the shock smoothing replaces the truncated power law downstream particle spectrum with a more complicated form having a power law tail at high momenta, in cases where the input particle spectrum is a delta function. Moreover, this solution can be made completely self-consistent for the case of a cold plasma.
