Linear polarization measurements at parsec resolution provide unique information about the degree of order and the orientation of magnetic fields and on the thermal particle environment, probing the physical conditions close to the cores of active galactic nuclei. We present 5 GHz VLBI total intensity and linear polarization images at milliarcsecond resolution of a representative sample of compact radio sources. These images illustrate the distinct polarization structures characteristic of different types of AGN. Models of shock-induced polarization in relativistic jets are used to interpret the superluminal motions and polarization data.
