The study of stars is enjoying a renaissance. Asteroseismology is now practical, and large stellar samples have been obtained from space missions such as Kepler and CoRoT. We are also obtaining rich stellar variability samples with unprecedented sensitivity and new insights into the magnetic fields of cool stars from spectropolarimetry and Zeeman studies. Solar and stellar studies can now provide complementary insights on subjects ranging from understanding the origins and evolution of magnetic fields to setting the fundamental stellar and solar abundance scale. I finish by outlining the future prospects for both solar and stellar studies.
