This is an article version of the poster presented at this meeting in which we discuss some recent results of our analysis of the luminosity -- emission line-width relation found in H II galaxies, a possible interpretation of the observed supersonic motions, the presence of second parameters in the relation and the validity of the application of these empirical relations to the determation of extragalactic distances. A full analysis of these results will be presented in a forthcoming paper.
