This paper studies the interaction between electromagnetic field radiation and a plasma with arbitrary electron temperature, including the ultrarelativistic case. Two mechanisms for the parametric excitation of natural plasma oscillations are considered: the excitation of natural HF oscillations as a consequence of electron mass oscillation and the excitation of natural LF oscillations by the relative motions of ions and electrons in the field of the incident wave. Instabilities caused by both mechanisms are analyzed, and it is shown that a relativistic plasma in a HF transverse electric field becomes unsteady due to the excitation and growth of natural oscillations. It is concluded that the investigated mechanisms can explain to some extent certain astrophysical phenomena, particularly cosmic-ray acceleration and plasma ejection from stars.
