Two mechanisms for the excitation of plasma oscillations in the ionosphere during the radio sounding of the ionosphere by the Alouette and Isis satellites are analyzed: the mechanism proposed by Benson (1974) associated with the Harris plasma instability, and the mechanism of parametric instability proposed by Palmer and Barrington (1973). The hypothesis of a mechanism parametric excitation of electron resonances in a strongly nonlinear regime is selected as the more likely.
