Results are presented for measurements of the intensity and half-width of the Lyman-alpha emission line in interplanetary space, which were obtained with the Venera 9 probe. A comparison of these results with theoretical values indicates satisfactory agreement with a model in which the sun is moving relative to the interstellar medium at a velocity of 20 km/s toward a point at 250 deg right ascension, -15 deg declination. The temperature of the neutral component of the interstellar medium is estimated as 12,000 K. The ionized hydrogen zone about the sun is found to be located at a distance of 5 AU in the direction of the solar motion and 20 AU in the opposite direction. The results suggest that the sun is situated in the intercloud medium of a neutral hydrogen region.
