Algebraic Reynolds stress models have been proven to be a powerful and inexpensive tool to predict turbulent stresses. In this study, the sensitivity of these models on their coefficients is investigated. Using standard mathematical optimization techniques it is studied whether predictions can be improved by tuning the model coefficients. As test problem the turbulent round jet as experimentally investigated by (Hussein et al. 1994) is chosen. Improvement is found by tuning the model coefficients. However, for non-homogeneous turbulence there is a fundamental flaw in the modeling approach associated with the weak equilibrium assumption.
