Over the last ten years, a collaboration of researchers in space physics, computer science and computational fluid dynamics has grown into the Center for Space Environment Modeling at the University of Michigan. The group has partnered with researchers at Rice, Stanford, NCAR, and NASA Goddard, among other institutions, to develop a first-principles-based software framework for modeling space-weather events.
In this paper, a solution-adaptive method for solving the MHD equations in a highly efficient manner on parallel computers is presented. In addition, an overview of the broader effort to develop the Space Weather Modeling Framework is given.
