An expression is derived for the probability density of the true parallax given a star's apparent magnitude and measured trigonometric parallax and the absolute magnitude distribution for its type. This expression allows calculation of the most probable parallax, which is compared with the conventionally-used weighted mean. The problem of compiling a catalogue of nearby stars is reconsidered.
