The Pan-STARRS-1 (PS1) optical survey telescope will carry out an unprecedented census of the extended solar neighborhood and nearby star-forming regions as one of its key science goals from 2008-2012. PS1 will provide a unique combination of wide-field coverage (30,0000 square degrees), red sensitivity, and high-quality, multi-epoch photometric and astrometric measurements. Our key project aims to make full use of these capabilities to explore the physical properties and evolution of low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and young stellar objects, through large, well-defined statistical samples. In addition the large volume probed by PS1 will enable identification of rare classes of extreme objects, including the coolest, youngest, eclipsing, erupting, varying, most metal-poor, and/or lowest mass objects.
