As with previous optical surveys, Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) discoveries will not be made secure merely by the recording of source photons at the detector. Rather, discovery will be manifest only after the exclusion of the signal from known sources and explained phenomena, which will utterly dominate the data. Here we present an overview of the software required to process and analyze PTF data in order to identify and focus our follow-up efforts on the most interesting sources turned up by the survey. The data will be transfered off the mountain and to a supercomputing facility for near real-time processing. Image data will be compared against fiducial reference templates to identify any new transient or variable sources, and such candidates will be delivered to a classifier for an initial classification. Photometric, and in some cases, spectroscopic follow-up observations of select candidates will be gathered to further refine a classification or to gather additional data for a science program. Survey data will be reprocessed to generate object catalogs including their time variability, archived, and made available to the public after a proprietary period.
