More than three decades after the Apollo missions to the moon, the interpretation of lunar magnetism remains elusive. The most useful result to come from lunar paleomagnetism would be a record of the intensity of the ancient lunar field through time. Unfortunately, recovering paleointensity is in general difficult. In the case of the lunar samples, it is particularly difficult because of the instability of their magnetic phases upon the heating. Nevertheless, there have been some marginally successful standard determinations and a variety of methods not involving heating have also given results. Among these latter, a very simple normalization by saturation remanence (IRMs) of lunar basalts defines a relatively high field period between approximately 3.85 and 3.65 Ae. The field may have been comparable with the present geomagnetic field. As has been frequently pointed out, IRMs normalization is a rough and ready method. However, the intensity of remanent magnetization acquired during the high field period is sufficiently different from that during other times that the high field period appears to be real. Some theoretical underpinning of the method of IRMs normalization has emerged from the work of Kletetschka and others, who have found that there is a simple relationship between the efficiency of thermoremanent magnetization and the saturation magnetization of magnetic phases. This permits a reexamination of the earlier results with the introduction of additional magnetic phase dependent parameters. Preliminary analysis is consistent with the earlier result.
