Seven sites from basaltic rocks of the Quixaba Formation (K/Ar age 3.4 +/- 1.7 m.y.) on Fernando de Noronha (3.85°S, 32.4°W) yield a pole at 80.3°N, 234°E with A95 = 2.9° and K = 446 after AF cleaning, and seven sites from the Remédios Formation (9.5 +/- 1.1 m.y.) yield a pole at 84.5°N, 136°E with A95 = 7.5° and K = 65. Combination of all published reliable data results in poles at 80.6°N, 216°E (N = 21, A95 = 3.2°, K = 100) and 86.0°N, 81°E (N = 17, A95 = 4.9°, K = 53) for the Quixaba and Remédios Formation, respectively (both with mixed polarity). The two pole positions differ significantly from each other. Seven sites from volcanics (K/Ar age 28.7 +/- 2.5 m.y.) in the province of Fortaleza (3.8°S, 38.7°W) yield a pole at 66°N, 54°E with A95 = 19.1° and K = 10.9. Rock magnetic investigations and chemical analyses on samples from Fernando de Noronha reveal as primary phase titanomagnetites with about 60% ulvöspinel in most cases. The titanomagnetites have undergone high-temperature oxidation and low-temperature oxidation of various degrees. The ferrimagnetic phases in the samples from the province of Fortaleza are magnetites with low-temperature alterations showing relative weak stability of remanence.
