It is suggested that the pairing of the diffuse interstellar lines is
caused by the simultaneous occurrence of Platt's particles and larger
aggregates of the same chemical composition. This hypothesis is based on
the study of a mathematical model of the optical properties of electrons
bound to particles ranging in size from 10 to 100 A.
