In models of active galactic nuclei involving the spherical accretion onto a black hole of plasma heated by the dissipation of magnetic fields, turbulence, etc., conditions in the plasma suggest the possibility that pair-production effects may be significant. The authors investigate numerically the extent and consequences of pair production in such situations using a Monte Carlo approach to Comptonization. It is found that the production of pairs is self-regulating, that pair density never greatly exceeds baryon density, and that the omission of pair production is not a serious flaw in these models.
