In the jets of blazars such as 3C 66A, W Comae and 3C 279 whose gamma-ray emission extends beyond 100 GeV, possibly produced by Compton upscattering of radiation fields external to the jet, a large number of electron-positron pairs may be created by annihilation of primary very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays with soft photons from the external radiation fields. This could potentially induce Compton-supported pair cascades.
We have developed a Monte Carlo simulation code to model the development of these cascades and their dispersion by magnetic fields. We have applied this code to parameters characteristic of gamma-ray loud blazars detected by Fermi. The deflection of secondary particles by magnetic fields and thus dispersion of the cascade emission may make radio galaxies, believed to be mis-aligned blazars, sources of GeV gamma-rays, potentially detectable by Fermi.
