Two Soviet, two Japanese, one European, and one American spacecraft will encounter the short period orbit comet P/Halley in March of 1986. P/Halley is unique in predictably exhibiting the full range of cometary activity, such as atmospheric jets, halos, and dust and ion tails. Since October 16, 1982, P/Halley has been the subject of a series of intense imaging, photometric, spectrographic, and astrometric investigations; while the comet was approaching the sun between 11 and 7 AU, the data thus obtained are consistent with the presence of an irregularly shaped and possibly heterogeneous, friable, slowly rotating object that is a few km across and is composed of water ice, fine dust, and carbonaceous material.
