A comparison of two broad-band CCD exposures (3700-7800 Å) of P/Halley (1982i) on 10 December 1982 and 14 January 1983, with the Danish 1.5 m telescope on La Silla, indicates a brightness increase of 1.0 ± 0.4 mag. The January image is broader than the seeing disc, although this may partly be a guiding effect. It is possible that the first signs of nuclear activity have been observed at ≡10.5 AU. Accurate positions have been measured.
