The possible astrophysical output of high angular resolution observations in spectral lines of the gaseous envelope around P Cyg is discussed. The advantages of interferometry over spectroscopy, and of spaceborne interferometers over ground based instruments, are discussed. The computed effective radius of the P Cyg system (star + envelope) in the hydrogen H alpha line is presented, forming a qualitative basis for the discussion which follows. It appears that observations of the spatial intensity distribution in a spectral line are sensitive both to the temperature and density distributions in the envelope. Although fits to the intensity distribution are expected to be more informative than fits to spectral line profile, it is however, strongly desirable to have observational data in several atomic transitions, especially those sensitive to temperature. This would be of a greater help, disentangling the effects of the temperature and density structures. Some transitions can be observed from the ground, but other important transitions are in the far UV spectral range which justifies spaceborne experiments.
