Photometric observations of Comet P/Brorsen-Metcalf obtained before its passage at perihelion are presented. The standard filters of the International Halley Watch: C2, BC, C3, CN, UC have been used. Gas production rates have been derived. These vary as r exp -n (where r is the comet-sun distance) with n = 3 (C2), 1.1 (C3) and 3.9 (CN). Production rates of solids follow the same law as gas with n = 2.3. The blue color exhibited by cometary grains may be interpreted as due to small grains dominating larger ones. The observations are discussed in the light of a model predicting the presence of an external organic cometary crust and radiation-processed organic materials coming out from fissures and patches in the crust.
