First evidence for extraterrestrial ozone came from recent discoveries of deep absorption bands in the ultraviolet reflectance spectrum of Ganymede, Dione and Rhea. To explain observations, several hypotheses have been put forward about how ozone is formed and why the observed bands differ from the known Hartley band. In an attempt to constrain hypotheses raised around this discovery, and resolve uncertainties in the interpretation, we have performed laboratory experiments. We have synthesized ozone in different condensed gases by 100 keV protons and UV photons, obtained ultraviolet reflectance spectra, quantified production rates as a function of temperature and observed sublimation of ozone by mass spectrometry. With these results, we will discuss questions of the origin, environment and stability of ozone in the icy satellites and other extraterrestrial sources.
