The problems of radiation in the shock layer over a vehicle entering into the atmosphere of a planet is reviewed. Various features, difficulties faced, and solutions found are summarized for Fire, Apollo, Pioneer-Venus, Galileo, Huygens, and Stardust entry flights. Problems encountered in arc-jet simulation and those anticipated in the future missions are discussed.
