New observations of Io's local and extended atmosphere in the far ultraviolet using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) were scheduled for the end of August 1998. The new observations were planned to extend and supplement observations obtained during the fall of 1997 in which spectral imaging in STIS mode G140L led to the discovery of HI emission, and revealed OI and SI emission features of Io's neutral atmosphere in unprecedented detail. In particular, new observations in mode G140L were planned to extend phase coverage of Io's orbit, and undispersed imaging using the FUV MAMA were planned to obtain improved imaging detail. This talk will highlight some of the new observations, and discuss points of similarity and differences compared to the 1997 observations.
