The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a 6.5 meter diameter, cryogenic space telescope. JWST's primary science goals address detection of the first stars and galaxies, mapping the assembly of galaxies, star and planetary system formation, and planetary systems and the origins of life. The current design of the telescope will be reviewed, including the key elements of its architecture: the telescope's optical assembly, its instrument complement, the spacecraft and the sunshield. JWST will be launched on an Ariane 5 to an L2 orbit, where the the telescope is operated in a passively cooled configuration. We discuss the projected scientific performance of JWST based on integrated modeling of the observatory and its instrument complement.
