NASA's Office of Space (OSS) has undertaken a monumental and inspiring challenge -- that of actively brokering powerful, positive, and productive relationships between the space science community it supports and the multiple realms of K-12 and public education nationwide. The OSS Education and Outreach Broker/Facilitator Program has named a set of regional Brokers/Facilitators whose primary function is to arrange alliances between educators and scientists that will help scientists turn results from space science missions and programs into educationally appropriate products and/or services that can be disseminated regionally or nationally. The Space Science Institute (SSI) has been chosen as one of five organizations serving as OSS Broker/Facilitator in a 12-state region (CO, AZ, NM, UT, WY, NV, MT, ID, WA, OR, Northern CA, and AL). SSI is a non-profit organization located in Boulder, Colorado, dedicated to excellence in research and education in the space and earth sciences. We have a robust program of educational endeavors that involve space and scientists. These include major traveling science exhibits (e.g. MarsQuest), curricular materials development (e.g. Solarscapes and the Cassini Teacher Guide), and workshops for scientists on K-12 education. SSI will carry out its OSS Broker/Facilitator role in collaboration with Wendy Pollock of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, Steve Pompea of Pompea & Associates, Russell Wright of Event Based Science, and James Hubbard of the Four Corners Rural Systemic Initiative.
