High velocity jets and equatorial tori are common features in the transition of stars from the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) to the planetary nebula phase, but their origins are not well understood. The tori expand at low velocity and represent the relatively sudden, final ejection of the stellar envelope at the end of the AGB phase. The jets are launched at high latitudes, with bi-polar or multi-polar geometries. These outflows occur at nearly the same time, providing strong evidence for an underlying connection between them. Their physical properties and their inter-relations potentially offer important insights into the ejection process. Here we compare the momenta of the jets with the masses of the tori in a sample of well studied objects. We use the results to evaluate and constrain possible formation scenarios.
