The origin and nature of molecular outflows from massive young stellar objects is still ambiguous. Are these simply scaled up versions of low mass YSOs or is the formation mechanism of the star (and hence the origin of any outflow) completely different. We have been attempting to answer this question over the past 3 years using a volume and luminosity limited sample of massive YSOs from our RMS survey using both Mopra and the JCMT. Our work on the JCMT (where we were able to observe C18O/13CO as well as 12CO) suggests that the outflow luminosity (and other related kinematical parameters) correlates most strongly with the mass of the natal molecular cloud core as measured by the C18O line. In addition the C18O line provides a measure of the intrisic line width which allows us to detect weak, low velocity flows which otherwise would be totally ambiguous. The aim of these observations is to add C18O/13CO data to our existing 1-0 12CO Mopra data to allow a full analysis of the properties of outflows from massive young stellar objects to be carried out.
