We present the initial results of our investigation into the field luminosity and mass functions of M dwarfs. We have assembled a database of matched SDSS and 2MASS observations of 3 million low-mass stars, two orders of magnitude larger than any previous study on this topic. The observations span the entire SDSS footprint, about 8,400 square degrees. Using this 8-color photometry and improved color-absolute magnitude relations, we derive luminosities and masses for each star in our sample. We quantify the uncertainties in our analysis using results from a calibration region of 30 square degrees, where we have spectroscopic observations of several thousand stars. Additionally, we measure the structure of the local Milky Way, determining the density profiles of the thin and thick disks.
