The UV-visible limb scattering measurements of OSIRIS are used for retrieving profiles of ozone and several other stratospheric constituents globally. A forward model of the propagation of radiation is a central part of the inversion of measurements to constituent densities. A number of new radiative transfer models have been developed for limb scattering measurements during the past few years. A minimal amount of approximation is required in Monte Carlo modeling of radiative transfer. Faster models developed for use in retrieval algorithms treat the spherical geometry of limb measurements in an approximate manner. In addition, the intensity of radiation reflected from Earth's surface or clouds can be taken into account only approximately. The albedo of Earth's surface, cloud optical depth and cloud altitude vary during a limb scan and they can even vary along the instantaneous line of sight of the instrument. Furthermore, in most retrieval methods effects of polarization have been neglected and modeling of scattering from aerosols is oversimplified. The justification of these approximations is discussed with the help of Monte Carlo simulations. First results of ozone and NO2 retrieval from OSIRIS measurements are very promising. Retrieval of aerosol parameters is more sensitive to modeling errors.
