Results are presented which indicate that the preliminary reverse impulse of a sudden storm commencement has an oscillatory structure in the form of a wave packet with a duration of about 1 min and a filling frequency of 0.25-0.05 Hz. The packets propagate with a velocity of about 100 km/s (at the ionospheric level) from the subsolar point into the magnetotail. In the course of propagation, the packet's amplitude and frequency decrease while the duration increases.
