A mechanism is described by which an extended ionization region, although vibrationally stable, can undergo oscillations of an unexpectedly complex nature. The existence of such oscillations is demonstrated with a one-zone model which is as physically realistic as possible. An equation of state which treats helium ionization correctly is used along with an opacity law suitable to the same physical conditions. This oscillator is related to well-studied simple oscillators, which are known to exhibit a wide range of both periodic and aperiodic behavior. The values and range of the one-zone model suggest an identification with the long-period variables.
