Different theories of cloud formation and prestellar core formation exist. Some plead for fast formation via rapid decay of turbulence and minor role of magnetic support, while others defend a slow formation process linked to strong magnetic support and ambipolar diffusion. Measuring the age of the clouds would help to discriminate between the scenarios. Chemical clocks have failed until now to estimate such lifetimes because of the complexity of chemistry and of its unknown initial conditions. Based on a simple and robust subset of the chemical network centred on the ortho/para H_2 ratio, we show that we can give a chemical age to the clouds and to the cores. Applied to the L183 main prestellar core, this model shows that the age of the source is compatible with a fast evolution, not with a slow one.
