On the basis of a review of theories of galactic structure and of the possible effects of an intergalactic magnetic field, it is shown that normal spiral galaxies may be divided into two categories, the rare M51-type and all the others. It is suggested that all the half-dozen or so galaxies whose structures appear to support the density-wave theory show one or more of the characteristics of the rare type of spiral, and that M51, M81, and M101 have companions which may account for their arms. Inadequacies in Toomre's models are considered. It is suggested that the original hydromagnetic model of spiral arms applies to noninteracting galaxies only; theoretical and observational results agree for the case of M33.
