A short outline is given of some of the main empirical features of the solar system. Cataclysmic theories of its origin are briefly mentioned. The general concept of a solar nebula is described. Accumulation theories of the formation of planets from the nebula are sketched with some critical comments. A proto-planet theory of the origin of planets and satellites is then considered. An attempt is made to place as much as possible of the work in a general setting and to call attention to a number of physical mechanisms that feature in one way or another in a number of theories.
