Cratering data from the moon, Mars, and Mercury have been interpreted by some as evidence that the inner solar system underwent a period of intense bombardment that ended about 4 billion yr ago. Planetary perturbations of small objects within the solar system seem unable to account for the effect. This paper suggests that stellar perturbations from members of the original open cluster within which the Sun formed triggered the brief flux of objects responsible for the bombardment.
