The origin of the black hole in Cyg X-1 is considered. It is shown that the efficiency associated with growth to the present mass of Cyg X-1 by accretion onto a neutron star is unreasonably low. It is suggested that a black hole of mass greater than or equal to 9 solar masses must form directly by implosion of a star of mass greater than or equal to 30 solar masses. An unknown factor, presumably associated with the increasing mass of the posthelium burning core, apparently alters the precollapse configuration or the dynamics of the explosion of massive stars. It is estimated that the Galaxy may contain about 10 million massive black holes.
