A comparison of moldavite chemical composition with that of rocks and unconsolidated sediments involved in the Ries impact indicates that Middle Miocene sands covering the surface at the time of impact are the only potential parent material of moldavites. The abundances of K, Rb, Cs, Sr, Ba, and the O-18/O-16 ratio in moldavites, however, can neither be directly derived from Miocene sediments nor from any sedimentary material of common composition. A novel hypothesis of moldavite melt condensation from a plasma of vaporized sands is proposed.
