The reported behavior of the pulse frequencies of several accreting millisecond pulsars is puzzling in two respects. First, power spectral analyses of the accretion-powered X-ray emission of these pulsars indicate that during outbursts their pulse frequencies change much faster than the rate of change of their spin frequencies predicted by the standard model of the accretion torque. Second, their pulse frequencies show wild swings of both signs that are not correlated with the mass accretion rates inferred from their X-ray fluxes. We have computed the expected X-ray waveforms of pulsars like these, including special and general relativistic effects, and find that the changes in their waveforms produced by physically plausible changes in the flow of accreting matter onto their surfaces can explain their apparently anomalous spin-frequency behavior. We discuss the further implications of this result.
