Recent developments concerning the study of diffuse interstellar lines are considered. It is suggested that the lines are caused by the absorption of polyatomic molecules and that the line width is the result of radiationless internal conversion between stable states. Furthermore, it is proposed that the absorbing species are long chain carbon molecules for which the number of carbon atoms is in the range from 5 to 15. The suggestion appears to account for the observations without straining current concepts of spectroscopy or astronomy.
