The authors present a compilation of axial ratios and published broad- and narrow-line Balmer decrements for 109 Seyfert galaxies of all classes. The reddening law they deduce for the broad-line region is identical to that found by Cheng et al. (1983) from broad-band colours of Seyferts and the distribution of dust is consistent with that producing the reddening in normal spiral galaxies. It is found that broad and narrow-line decrements are not well correlated. There is some evidence that the reddening of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 1.5 galaxies increases with decreasing luminosity with ΔE(B-V) ≅ -0.06ΔMB for b/a = 0.6. The authors' prediction of reddenings from orientations are well correlated with published estimates of the reddening based on the λ2200 absorption feature.
