Mars: Life, Samples
Scientific paper
Life may have developed on Mars in similar niches as those of the terrestrial primitive biosphere. To search for organic signatures on Mars, we have developed new solutions in the experiment that we will present in the frame of a US/French future proposal, SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars), devoted to in-situ (atmospheric, ground, and underground) chemical and isotopic analysis. This apparatus will permit to analyze, in parallel with organic traces, minerals whose existence is correlated with the possible development of life. We present, here, the part of SAM proposal devoted to the analysis of the gases evolved by the Martian samples, and preliminary results about the differentiation between minerals from biotic and abiotic origin.
