Betelgeuse's linear polarization was intensively monitored over the 1979-1980 observing season, an interval of 7 months. Significant ordered (as opposed to stochastic) changes were detected. The polarization variations arise from changes in the lower atmosphere - either directly through changes in the photospheric scattering regime, or indirectly through changes in the illumination of circumstellar material. Mechanisms to account for these lower atmospheric variations are indicated.
