Nearby binary-star systems with rapid orbital motion are and will continue to be the principal source of our knowledge on stellar masses. Owing to its expected high angular resolution and high-precision astrometric performance, HST will provide unusual opportunities for binary-star research. The purpose of this project is to measure with HST/FGS in the transfer-function mode selected binary stars, primarily visual pairs at critical phases in their orbits, in order to improve substantially our knowledge of their orbital elements. These results will not only yield improved mass values for the systems so investigated, but will also serve as important calibrators for a large body of existing data on binary-star orbits and stellar masses.
