The "Astron" automatic station was launched into the orbit of an artificial satellite of the earth on March 23, 1983. The station was designed to perform astrophysical investigations by means of two instruments in the ultraviolet and in X-rays. The authors present the basic parameters of the orbit and how they evolved under the influence of gravitational perturbations. They give the basic characteristics of the onboard systems and the complex of scientific apparatus. They consider questions about the control of station operation as it performed scientific investigations, and they present the principal results of station operations in the course of five years.
