The 2dF-XMM Wide Angle Survey project aims to optically identify a significant sample of X-ray sources drawn from XMM-Newton observations covering over 10 square degrees using the Two Degree Field system (2dF) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). The 2dF observations carried out provide optical spectra for 3000 potential counterparts to XMM X-ray sources down to R 21 mag. Of these 1000 X-ray sources have been positively identified into four classes based on the optical properties: broad line AGN (BLAGN), absorption line galaxies (Gal), narrow emission line galaxies (NELG), and stars. We have obtained a sample of 72 optically bright, X-ray faint (i.e. log(f_X/f_R<=-1) and 0.2-12 keV luminosity L_X<=10^43 erg s^-1) sources from the 2dF X-ray counterparts which show normal or narrow emission line spectra, i.e. Gal or NELG sources. The classification of these sources in terms of the underlying emission mechanisms has been given by using the X-ray colours/spectra and morphology from XMM and optical spectra from 2dF, combined with the optical morphology. The sample is found to be dominated by normal galaxies, starburst galaxies and low luminosity AGN.
